Research Interest

Liquid crystals (LCs) are supramolecular self-assemblies that are ubiquitous in nature and revolutionized the modern life in a significant way. LCs often unraveled the mysteries of complex natural systems and beaconed the discoveries that benefitted the mankind. In Soft Matter Research group at IIT-Guwahati, we study various kinds of liquid crystalline self assemblies, towards the development of functional materials. The work involves the molecular design and synthesis followed by their structural and material characterization by different techniques. We are exploring the potentials of several such self-assembling systems based on small molecules, oligomers, macromolecules and polymers in the development of molecular electronic devices like organic solar cells, organic light emitting diodes, field effect transistors and gas sensors. Apart from LCs we are also interested in the design and synthesis of photopatternable self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and supported lipid bilayer membranes (SBLMs), which are important from the viewpoint of nanotechnology and medicine respectively.
