DESIGN RESEARCH GROUP
The Design Research group works in a theoretical and Design application framework with UCD (User Centered Design) as the principle axis. The focus is on issues in the design of Systems (including Information systems) and Products with a ‘futures’ interest in Knowledge management, Affective Computing, and Experience Design. With DESIGN as a perimeter the Human User is the foci.
Department of Design
Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati.
The Group is actively engaged in running the PhD program in Design, besides offering courses for the undergraduate and Post graduate students. The group is also collaborating with other institutions through Research projects. The group invites Research groups interested in any area of design to get in touch with the Professor - Design research via email: pradeep* AT* iitg (dot) ernet (dot) in.
Some of the current areas of interest on which academic & project work has already been initiated are:
Design Semantics and Culture – Cross cultural issues in design of products, environments & software. Cross cultural issues in Useabiity testing. HCI & Emotions.
Design Cognation and product usage experience- Mental Modeling, User data elicitation & modeling.
Interaction & Interface Design heuristics for soft ware, transportation and medical electronic products.
Human – Computer Interaction - Usability Testing - tools and evaluation methods.
Instruction Design and Learning Management Systems.
ICT and Indian Society
The Design Research Group has the following units:
Usability Engineering lab (HCI & Virtual Reality)
Innovation Engineering – Creativity & ideation lab
CAD - Creative Visualisation & Conceptualisation
Product Samples repository.
All the above units are housed under one hall (collectively called the UE Labs)in the Core Annexe-2 block – ground floor of the Department of Design.
The Design Research labs have setups and equipments such as Interactive Board, Video-conferencing and remote testing, Protocol and Heuristics observation recording, Eye Movement recorder, Product Samples repository and library.
In HCI research the focus of the projects done by the Design students both Under graduate and Research are as follows: usability work; novel interfaces; web design; affective computing; psychological models; creative arts, design and architecture; design of input devices; e-government; information navigation; mobile devices; learning content; Training and instructional content; visualization; and home computing.
