DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT:

[1] Bicycle with higher carrying capacity

NGO/Institution Associated:

Sristi Science and Technology Development mission, Nagaon, Assam

Objectives:-

  • Enhancement of carrying capacity of  bicycle through appropriate modification of its design for transportation of banana from production site to the market
  • Reduction of stress and  drudgery on the farmers/ vendors

Introduction:
On the basis of a survey conducted by The North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (NEDFi), the Darrangiri Banana Market in the district of Assam, is one of the Asia's largest banana markets in terms of volume of transactions. The banana sold in this market is carried by the farmers from the neighbouring hilly areas of Assam and Meghalaya on normal bicycle.  The carrying capacity of such normal bicycle is around 6 to  8 bunches. Moreover, the road connectivity in this area is very poor. So the stress and drudgery of the farmers are huge.

Achievements:
RuTAG-NE in association with Sristi Science and Technology Development mission, Nagaon (NGO) has developed improved versions of the normal bicycle. This was achieved  (i) by enhancing the length of the bicycle and  (ii) introducing additional chain sprocket. This has enhanced the carrying capacity of the modified bicycle from 8 to 14 -16 bunches of banana. This has helped the farmers to carry the banana bunches from far flung areas easily with reduced drudgery and stress.  The bicycles were field tested, and the banana growers found it very convenient.

Modified bicycle

Contribution towards strengthening RuTAG:

It has helped the farmers and vendor in carrying such loads of banana or other items, comfortably with less drudgery and stress. This has contributed to an additional income of Rs. 150 per day, raising their income from Rs 250/- to Rs 400/- per day. It also facilitates the farmer/vendor to drive the bicycle along with Banana bunches or similar load of vegetables, etc. The modified bicycle requires less human effort even when the load is quite high.

Current Scenario - Multiplication/entrepreneurship etc: Technology is ready for dissemination.
