REUSABLE ITEMS COLLECTION DRIVE FROM STUDENTS (April 17, 2016)

NSS, IIT Guwahati conducted a collection drive for reusable items from final year students in the campus. As the academic year is coming to an end, many final year students leave many reusable items in their rooms. So, the volunteers of NSS, IIT Guwahati went from room to room of every student hostel in the campus and final year students donated whatever reusable items they could. These collected items were later distributed to the underprivileged people living in the slums nearby IIT Guwahati. The collection drive was a success and many reusable items were collected.

SILA SINDURI GHOPA STUDENTS’ VISIT TO IITG CAMPUS (April 16, 2016)

As a part of the regular weekly teaching project conducted by the volunteers of NSS, IIT Guwahati at Sila Sinduri Ghopa for school children, we organized a visit for those students into the campus. They had a very informative and interesting demonstration session of basic physics experiments. Concepts like Bernoulli’s principle, reflection, refraction, working of electric generator and motor, basic magnetism, etc. were taught by the physics department staff members Dr. Sidananda Sarma and Lokesh Chakravorty. The session was motivating and very much enjoyed by the students of Sila Sinduri Ghopa village school students.

RTI LECTURE (March 27, 2016)

In order to raise awareness about RTI activism in India and RTI activists, NSS, IIT Guwahati organized a lecture in the campus by prominent lawyer and RTI activist Mr. Gurupreet Singh. The lecture involved a hands-on discussion on how to become an RTI activist and the finer details involved in the job. After the lecture there was a question and answer session in which many students raised intelligent questions and enlightening discussions took place. The students were thoroughly satisfied with the lecture and showed enthusiasm towards such a profession.

PLANTATION DRIVE (March 20, 2016)

NSS, IIT Guwahati, along with the mechanical department student group MESA, IIT Guwahati organized a plantation drive inside the IIT Guwahati campus. Volunteers from both groups got together and planted saplings of various types all around the campus area. The Dean of Student Affairs Prof. Chandan Mahanta also participated in the plantation drive and planted a few saplings with enthusiasm. He reiterated to all of us how important it is for us to take care of the environment and help in whatever way we can to protect trees. Overall the plantation drive was a success and the campus is now a greener place.

AADHAAR CARD SURVEY (March 13, 2016)

The volunteers of NSS, IIT Guwahati conducted a door-to-door campaign in the nearby villages of Agithory, Sila Sinduri Ghopa, Lathia Bagicha and near Ferry Ghat in order to create awareness about Aadhaar card to the villagers. The Aadhaar card is something which is now-a-days being required everywhere and as a citizen of India, it’s the right and responsibility to know about the Aadhaar card and obtain one. Surprisingly, about 95% of the people living in the villages didn’t know about the Aadhaar card. The volunteers conducted a door-to-door survey in the neighboring villages and enlightened the people there about the Aadhaar card and how to apply for it. We also promoted the essence and uses of the card to the people. We helped the illiterate villagers to find their unique national identity.

COLLABORATIVE PROJECT WITH ‘NOTEBOOK’ (March 12, 2016)

“Notebook” is an NGO whose main purpose is teaching to underprivileged kids in small villages. NSS, IIT Guwahati is pleased to announce that we have initiated our first collaborative project with Notebook. The first project is teaching to students in a village called Abhaypur in northern Guwahati in a school called Shankaradeva Vidyalaya. The activities are primarily limited to grooming sessions and imparting general awareness among the students there of classes 8th, 9th and 10th. We also have taken up the teaching of 5th standard students in order to fill the loop holes of their curriculum and provide a stronger base to them.

CLEANLINESS DRIVE IN AGITHORY (February 7, 2016)

Agithory is a village which is located just outside the IIT Guwahati campus. The NSS unit of IIT Guwahati organized a cleanliness drive in that village. The volunteers took up the task of cleaning up the village and removed trash like plastic, paper and bottles, glass from the roads and footpaths. On the whole, by conducting the cleanliness drive, NSS volunteers were able to maintain the cleanliness of the village as best as they could. They received help from the residents of the village as well.

CLEANLINESS DRIVE IN SILA SINDURI GHOPA (February 7, 2016)

Sila Sinduri Ghopa is a village located around 5 to 8 kilometres from the campus of IIT Guwahati. The NSS unit of IIT Guwahati organized a cleanliness drive in that village on the 7th of February this year. The volunteers took up the task of cleaning up the village and removed trash like plastic, paper and bottles, glass from the roads and footpaths. On the whole, by conducting the cleanliness drive, NSS volunteers were able to maintain the cleanliness of the village as best as they could. They received help from the residents of the village as well.

WINTER CLOTHES DISTRIBUTION DRIVE (February 7, 2016)

The winter clothes collected during the collection drives from the faculty and the students of the IIT Guwahati campus were distributed in this drive. The volunteers of NSS, IIT Guwahati went to the slum areas near the Guwahati railway station and distributed these winter clothes to the poor people living in the slums. The drive was a great success and it was great to see the smiles on the people’s faces when they received the clothes.

STUDENTS WINTER CLOTHES COLLECTION DRIVE (February 5, 2016)

Volunteers of NSS, IIT Guwahati visited all students of IIT Guwahati and collected winter clothes such as sweaters, scarfs, wool caps, etc. The volunteers visited all the hostels including boys’ hostels, girls’ hostels and married scholars’ hostel. The drive was a success and many useful clothes were collected from the students which were to be distributed later on to the people living in slum areas nearby.

FACULTY WINTER CLOTHES COLLECTION DRIVE (January 24, 2016)

Volunteers of NSS, IIT Guwahati and the team organized a winter clothes collection drive to collect winter clothes donated by the faculty of IIT Guwahati. These winter clothes were to be distributed to underprivileged people living in the nearby slum areas who can’t afford them. The volunteers collected clothes from almost 500 faculty members and staff quarters. They all contributed whatever they could spare.

CHILDREN’S DAY CELEBRATION IN AGITHORY (November 14, 2015)

The Agithory village, which is right outside the IIT Guwahati main gate, has been a center for teaching projects conducted by NSS, IIT Guwahati. The volunteers go to the village on a weekly basis and teach about 100 students from class 2 to class 10 in subjects like Hindi, Assamese, Maths, and Science. On November 14th, the Children’s Day of India, the volunteers organized a celebration of the day for the students in that village. Food and juice were distributed to the kids, and merry celebrations happened. The children were very happy and thankful for the celebration of the occasion.

CLEANLINESS DRIVES (November 8, 2015)

On the 8th of November, 2015, the volunteers of NSS, IIT Guwahati organized a cleanliness drive inside the campus as a part of the ‘Swach Bharat Abhiyaan’ program initiated by our Honorable Prime Minister. The volunteers walked around all the boys hostels and picked up trash like paper, polythene, used bottles, glass, etc. from the roads and footpaths. On the whole the cleanliness drive was a success and we made a progress in maintaining the cleanliness of the campus.

On the first of November, 2015, the volunteers of NSS, IIT Guwahati organized a cleanliness drive inside the campus as a part of the ‘Swach Bharat Abhiyaan’ program initiated by our Honorable Prime Minister. The volunteers started their drive in the morning from the new Students’ Activity Centre (New SAC) and walked on the roads to the viewpoint of the campus. From there they walked till the market complex of IITG and then returned to the new SAC by the road on the banks of the Serpentine Lake. Throughout the cleanliness drive, while walking, the volunteers picked up trash like paper, polythene, used bottles, glass, etc. from the roads and footpaths. On the whole the cleanliness drive was a success and we made a progress in maintaining the cleanliness of the campus.

ASSAM FLOOD RELIEF CAMP
(October 11, 2015)

A social activity involving donation of reusable items, clothes and rice was organized with a view of relieving the flood victims in a village called Boralimara, Boko (Assam). As usual all the IITG fraternity extended their hands in the noble act of help. All the collected items in the previous collection drives from the faculty, staff and students were distributed. In quantity, around 500 kgs of rice and pulses were distributed to the affected victims. The relief camp was great success and it was great to see the smiles on the people’s faces when they received the items.

STUDENTS REUSABLE ITEMS COLLECTION DRIVE
(October 3, 2015)

Volunteers of NSS, IIT Guwahati visited all the students of IIT Guwahati and collected reusable items for the recent flood victims of Assam. The volunteers visited all the hostels including the boys’ hostels, girls’ hostels and the married scholars’ hostel and collected reusable items including footwear, clothes, etc. The drive was a success and many useful items were collected which were to be distributed to the flood victims later on.

WASTE MANAGEMENT DURING PINKATHON
(September 27, 2015)

NSS, IIT Guwahati in collaboration with Waste Warriors took responsibility of the waste management during the Pinkathon. Volunteers of NSS, IIT Guwahati helped with the waste management during the marathon by picking up the trash from the ground. The cleanliness of the ground was maintained. After the event was completed the volunteers of NSS took the help of paid workers of that area to clean all the leftover trash from the ground and segregate all the waste and transport it to the Guwahati city waste management.

Visit to Ashadeep - A Mental Health Society: Oct 12,2014

ASHADEEP- 'A Mental Health Society', whose founder was awarded by Padma Shri recently. Today NSS, IIT Guwahati volunteers and Social Club members visit to one of its centres which was at Rehabari. This is a home to mentally ill women who once used to live up on streets. Interacting with them and knowing about their life forced us to think seriously about the life we are living: Well of course you know my answer -" We don't realize how lucky we are". Although they have serious mental illness, they don't have so much facility but they know how to live a life and we seriously learned a lesson from them. I can't probably say all in words because you can only feel it if you visit to this place. Well, i am attaching the link containing all the pics of today and link of Ashadeep. One request to all of you, please spread awareness that not to ignore mentally ill people rather help them. Even Suicide is some times the case of mental illness ( What we call is Major Depression). Responding to loss happened in Assam due to floods, on 5th October, NSS IIT Guwahati distributed approximately 800 kg of clothes, 400 kg of rice, 80 kg of pulses, 100 pairs of shoes (or slippers), other needful items to 100 families of "DIRIMA" village, which is badly affected by floods recently.We also distributed stationary items & chocolates to kids.

In the Independence Day address to the nation this year, the Hon'ble Prime Minister announced the launch of Swachcha Bharat Abhiyan on 2 october, 2014. On that regard, we have launched it on 2 Oct, 2014 with Cleanliness Drive followed by talk by Director and other delegates.

It's the end of mid sem in IITG and NSS-IITG has used this opportunity for a better cause. There was a paper collection drive held in the campus and nss volunteers collected used papers and notebooks from students who no longer have any use with them. The papers and books that have been collected will be sent to recycling and notebooks will be made out of it and it will be donated to the poor and needy.

Campus Cleanliness Drive: Sept 12,2014

The NSS unit of IITG successfully organized campus cleanliness drive to clean the academic complex area and its surroundings. There was a significant change after this drive. The main purpose of this drive was to get visibility and make people think of the need and cause of cleaner surroundings. Students carried out the cleanliness drive for over two hours. Later they took the pledge to maintain cleanliness and also spread awareness to keep the campus clean.

Blood Donation Camp: Sept 5th & 7th,2014

The National Service Scheme (NSS), IIT Guwahati, in association with Techniche have organized a blood donation camp in the college premises from 5th of September to 7th of September. As it is said 'If you are a blood-donor, you are a hero, to someone, somewhere, on Earth who received your gracious gift of life', this camp also pressurized the need to create awareness among youth for active participation in such a noble cause. At the end, all that mattered is the satisfaction that a life will be saved by a gesture from you, a bottle blood!!

We collected clothes and other needy items from students,staff and faculty of IIT Guwahati.After that, we went to village Sila Sindurighopa,Guwahati on AUG 16,2014 for distributing all these items.

Impact

We distributed these clothes and other needy household items to people of around 110 houses.Apart from it we distributed school items to approximately 200 kids and ya ofcourse gave them chocolates too.Kids smile were priceless!

Enthusiastic faculty,staff,students including Director of IIT Guwahati came together and planted saplings at IIT Guwahati on Independence Day.Total of around 163 saplings were planted all around the campus.What a day it was!

We collected clothes and other needy items from 572 faculty and staff quarters on AUG 9,2014.Also,lots of students contributed whatever they could spare.

We distributed all these to needy ones and hence created lots of happiness.
