    Modern campaigning has been upended over the past decade by advances in media technology on a magnitude not seen since the arrival of television in the mid-20th century. Campaigns of all sorts are impacted by new mobile technology - political, governmental, NGO and corporate. This course focuses on the challenges and opportunities for election campaign research with examples from country and institutional contexts in the Americas, Europe and India. This graduate-level course provides an overview of key concepts, research designs, and methods used to advance research on influence in past, present and likely future campaign contexts. Students will receive an extensive bibliography of key readings on election campaign research, some of which will be assigned. Students will complete the course having learned about the evolution of:

  • Country and institutional contexts for campaign research: media and political systems. Cases and examples from the Americas, Europe & India

  • Media effects research in election campaigns from early modern (post-World War II) to the present day

  • Research designs to investigate key concepts in media effects research: agenda-setting, priming, framing

  • Research designs and methods used to investigate key concepts in election research: public opinion, information content, campaign mobilization and party support

  • Country cases and examples from the Americas, Europe, India

    You should attend if

    á       You are a business executive, administrative officer from a government or private organization.

    á       You are a student (preferably doctoral or masters), researcher or a faculty member at an academic or a technical institution

    Fees

    The participation fees for taking the course are as follows:

    (A)   Participants from foreign countries: US $ 200

    (B)   Participants from Industry Organizations: Rs 10000/-

    (C)   Faculty members from academic institutions: Rs 5000/-

    (D)   Students/Researchers from academic and research institutions: Rs 1000/-[student registration fee is refundable]

    The above fee includes all Lecture Notes/video- learning material preparation, computer use for tutorials and assignments, laboratory equipment usage charges, 24-hour free internet facility. Food, transport and accommodation of course participants will be borne by the individual course participants themselves.

    Online portal registration fee of Rs. 500/- (non-refundable) is separate.

    Accommodation New

    All the participants will be accommodated in the boys and girls hostels on payment basis. The hostel rooms will be for single occupancy and bedding etc will be provided on payment basis. The average cost for hostel accommodation is about Rs 500/- per day which includes the cost for basis lunch, dinner and breakfast menu.

    Few Guest House rooms will be available for the participants and these rooms will be allotted to the faculty members on twin sharing and first-come first-serve basis. Guests will be paying their own accommodation and food charges in the Guest House. The cost of accommodation and food in the Guest House is approximately Rs 1000/- per person per night.

    Once you arrive at the institute, please inform the security at the gate that you will be going either to the guest house or the respective hostels and please check in directly. The updated list for accommodation will be linked from this page shortly.

    How to reach IIT GuwahatiNew

    Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati is located just on the outskirts of the city of Guwahati and is well connected to other parts of the country by road, rail or air. It is around 20 km from the heart of the city and around 40 min drive from the airport. To reach the institute from the city, there is an Institute bus service that runs regularly to and from the city. The following map (not to the scale) shows the relative location of the IIT Guwahati campus from both the airport and the train station.

    If you are arriving by train, you can take either the institute bus, a taxi or an auto-rikshaw from the train station. The bus stop for the institute bus is at a walking distance from the railway station. The institute bus timing can be found here .

    If you are arriving by flight, the best way to reach IIT Guwahati is by taking a pre-paid taxi from the airport. Radio taxi service is also available from the airport to IIT Guwahati. Please call 0361-222-2233 to book a "Prime Cab" or call 0361-222-8888 to book a My Taxi . If you prefer a radio cab, it is adviseable to reserve one before arrival in Guwahati.
