Mizo is spoken predominantly in
the Koiasib and Aizwal districts of Mizoram. Chakma and Lakher
in the Chhimtuipui district, Reang in Taibang district and Pawi
in Lunglei district. Apart from Chakma, all the other languages
are Tibeto-Burman languages belonging to the Kuki-Chin Group.
It may be mentioned here that Chakma is a language which
is spoken by the Chakma Tribes residing mainly in the Chittagong
Hill tracts of Bangladesh. Apart from Mizoram, Chakma speakers are
also found in isolated pockets in Myanmar.
Grierson in 1904 labeled Chakma as a dialect of Bangla, depending
mainly on the lexical correspondences between these two languages.
The Indo-Aryan roots of the language is evident and hence it can
be termed as a Indo-Aryan language.
