Complete Linguistic Map of North-East

The linguistic map includes the geographical distribution and location of  all the languages belonging to different language families spoken in the entire Noth-Eastern part of India. In fact this is the first such attempt in the construction of a full fledged linguistic map of the region. It is the result of an extensive survey and field work done in this area by the collaborator in this project from Gauhati University since the last decade. Apart from such a survey all relevant published material available in these languages have been consulted. In this regard the pioneering work of Grierson's Linguistic Survey of India and the works of other Western officials and missionaries must be made. Also mention must be made about the various departments of the Government of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland Bhasa Parishad and also the various vernacular miscellaneous publications of native speakers of various N.E. languages.

Finally thanks are due to various colleagues in the language departments of the Universities of Nagaland and Manipur, whose comments and suggestions helped us a lot in preparing this map. We take this opportunity to place on record the gratitude we owe to Prof. Robins Burling, Professor Emeritus, Michigan Unviersity, for making us available his preliminary draft of a paper on the Tibeto Burman languages of North-East India (1996).
