Tibeto-Burman

The entire state of Arunachal Pradesh consists of a uniformly
dominant Tibeto-Burman population. The Tibeto-Burman sub family
is represented by the following groups: |

Tanee
The geographical distribution of the various languages of
the Tanee Group are:
Apatani is spoken in the East Kameng District;
Mishmi comprising of the Idu, Digaru and the
Miju groups along with Padam are spoken in
the Dibang Valley District; Hill Mishing is
spoken in the Lower Subansiri District, Mishing
in the Lohit District (See section on Assam for
distribution of Mishing in the Brahmaputra Valley);
Tagin is spoken in Upper Subansiri District;
Gallong, Bengni, Bokar and Bori in West
Sieng District and Milang in the East Sieng
District. It may be mentioned here that the previously used
term Adi comprised the languages like : Gallong,
Tagin, Mising, Mising (Hill), Bori, Bengni and Milang.
The population of such Adi speakers has been recorded
as 155094 according to the 1991 census.The Mishmi
population is recorded as 28441(1991 census).

Hruso
The various languages of the Hruso Group are
distributed as follows:
Hruso previously also known as Aka is spoken
in the East and West Kameng District, Dhammai/
Miji is spoken in the West Kameng District and
Bangru in the Upper Subansiri District.

Lolo Burmese
The Lolo Burmese
Group is represented by the Singpho language which
is spoken in the Tirap District.

Monpa
The Monpa Group represented by Monpa, Tshangla
and Takpa is spoken predominantly in the West
Kameng District in the Western Arunachal Pradesh bordering
Bhutan. The population as recorded in the 1991 census of
this group is 43179. It may be added here that Takpa
which is often regarded as the Northern Monpa resembles
the Bumtang languages of Central Bhutan. This language
is also spoken in Tibet where it is known as "Cuona
Menba" (Driem 1992; Michailovsky and Mazaudon 1994).

Serdukpen
The Serdukpen Group consisting of Serdukpen,
Bugun/Khoa and Sulung also known as Puroit
are spoken in the West Kameng and the Lower Subansiri
Districts. It is interesting to note here that in Arunachal
Pradesh the Sulung or the Puroits are regarded
as the original inhabitants.

Konyak
Wanchoo and Phom belonging to the Konyak

in the Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh.
