The department of mathematics, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, was one of the first departments to be set up in the institute in 1995. The department felt it that in order to keep us abreast of the latest developments in mathematical research, there was the need for a forum wherein mathematicians could present their works and initiate discussions on various topics. The IITG mathematics Seminar Series came into being on 6th March 1996 with the inaugural talk delivered by Prof. Jyotiprasad Medhi, Emeritus Professor, Gauhati University, Assam. Since then we have had a very successful seminar series with Mathematicians and Scientists delivering lectures. Seminar speakers include some of the mathematicians from abroad, namely the USA, the UK, Germany, Hungary, Canada, Israel, Finland, Iceland in addition to the ones from the leading Indian institutions like IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, Indian Statistical Institute Kolkata, Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai, Mumbai University, North-Eastern Hill University, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Gauhati University etc.
