Plastics are the most commonly used materials in today’s scenario due to their low cost, light weight, easy processability and can be commercially produced from the abundantly available petrochemical and renewable bio-feedstock. However, more than ninety percent of polymers are produced by exploiting petrochemical feedstock. It is noteworthy to mention that currently packaging sector accounts for over forty percent of the total worldwide plastics consumption. Such plastics are categorically used in commodity, engineering, and medical applications. However, high-volume usage of conventional non-degradable plastics is compromising the environmental sustainability. To overcome the above limitations of conventional plastics, CoE-SusPol will be exploring a large number of alternatives including bio-based plastics. These have obtained increased attention both, due to their ability to be degraded naturally into fundamental components and due to the fact that they can be prepared from renewable resources. Significant efforts have been made to produce biodegradable plastic materials with similar functionalities as their conventional counterparts.
